How to Blur the Background on iPhone
Use Portrait mode, Photos Depth Control, or a browser tool to blur an iPhone photo background while keeping the person clear.
Choose the method that matches your photo
If the image was captured in a compatible Portrait mode, edit its Depth Control in Apple Photos. If it is a regular person photo, use the browser tool to create a person mask, soften the background, compare the edges, and export a new copy.
- Portrait photo with depth data: edit in Photos.

Adjust blur on an existing Portrait photo
- Open the photo in Apple Photos and tap Edit.
- Find the portrait or depth control supported by that file.
- Move the control gradually. A lower f-number usually creates stronger simulated background blur.
- Inspect hair, glasses, hands, and objects held near the body.
- Save the edit, knowing Photos can generally revert it later.
Blur the background of a regular iPhone photo
A standard image usually has no editable depth map. Open BackgroundBlur in Safari or another current browser, choose the person photo, and let the local model separate the person from the surroundings.
- Choose a clear JPG, PNG, or WebP image.
- Start with the Portrait preset and compare the full outline.
- Lower blur strength or edge softness if fine details look unnatural.
- Export a separate JPG, WebP, or PNG result.
Take a new photo with a blurred background
Place the person farther from the background, use clean light, avoid busy edges around hair, and move close enough for the subject to occupy a useful part of the frame. Portrait mode works best when the phone can clearly estimate subject separation.
How to make the blur look natural
- Begin with moderate blur rather than the maximum value.
- Inspect shoulders, loose hair, fingers, glasses, and clothing gaps.
- Keep enough background shape to preserve believable context.
- Use a clearer source when the person and background share similar colors.
Troubleshooting
The Depth slider is missing
The photo probably lacks compatible portrait depth information. Use the browser workflow for a regular person photo.
The hair edges look cut out
Reduce edge softness and blur strength, then inspect at full size. Fine, transparent, or motion-blurred hair is difficult for any automatic mask.

Browser decoding varies. Export or share a JPG copy before using the first release of the tool.
